The full Moon in July is called the Buck Moon because the antlers of male deer (bucks) are in full-growth mode at this time. Bucks shed and regrow their antlers each year, producing a larger and more impressive set as the years go by.

A family-friendly event open to the general public free of charge. Great for all ages! Open houses typically feature a short presentation, a tour of the observatory, and telescope viewing opportunities.
Note: Open House will take place regardless of the weather. However please be aware that cloud cover, storms in the area, high humidity, and other circumstances beyond our control may impact viewing conditions, or preclude astronomical observations altogether. In this case, the presentation and tour of the observatory will still take place, and it is still a great opportunity to meet local astronomy enthusiasts and learn about the exciting world of astronomy.

The Sturgeon Moon is named after the abundance of lake sturgeon in the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain during late summer. Native American tribes and settlers once relied on lake sturgeon as a vital food source.

The full moon in September is often called the Corn Moon or Barley Moon because it occurs when corn is typically harvested in North America. The moon appears especially bright and rises early at this time, allowing farmers to continue harvesting into the night.

The full Moon on Thursday, October 17, 2024, is known by its nickname, the Hunter’s Moon—it appears low and large on the horizon. This year, it’s also the biggest and brightest Supermoon—so that should be quite a sight! Th Hunter‘s Moon will be below the horizon, so wait until sunset to watch it rise and take its place in the sky. Like September’s Harvest Moon, the Hunter’s Moon rises around the same time for several nights, bringing early light to aid harvesting and hunting.

Beaver Moon is one of the nicknames for the November full Moon. The term has origins from a variety of traditions and folklore in Native American and European culture. One explanation – November is when beavers prepare for the winter by fortifying dams and stocking their food supply.
